AI DIRECTION
Creative direction and art direction decide what something says and how it feels. AI direction decides how technology behaves around people, and who stays in charge.
WHAT IS AI DIRECTION
AI direction is the leadership discipline of deciding where AI belongs in a product, a team or a creative process, how it should behave toward people, and who is accountable for the result. It asks the humane question first: what does this do to the person using it, after they have used it?
How do you use AI in a human way?
Human is not the same as humane. Every technology is made by humans, slot machines included. The humane question is plainer: what does this do to the person using it, after they have used it? Ask it at 7 in the morning, at 11 at night and after a bad day. Measure how people feel an hour later, not only how long they stayed. Let AI carry the heavy lifting, and let people keep the judgment, the taste and the final word.
- Ask what it does to the person afterwards
- Measure how people feel, not only what they click
- A named person owns every outcome
How do you use it responsibly?
Responsible means the part that never changes is written down. Show alternatives. Make the reasoning visible. Stay correctable, never final. Keep those principles apart from the content that changes every week, so trust does not have to be argued again for every new use. Know exactly when a person belongs in the process: in the background early on, and in the room when a real decision is on the table. In regulated environments such as financial services, that clarity is what makes innovation possible.
- Show alternatives
- Make the reasoning visible
- Stay correctable, never final
Where is it efficient, and where does it work against you?
AI is cheap speed. It makes exploring nearly free, and that exposes how many organizations were built for the opposite. Use it to widen the options, keep people for choosing between them, and keep the original so that others can check your work.
WORKS FOR YOU
- Testing ideas before they are fully explained
- Prototyping before the problem is agreed
- Structuring and summarizing research, with the sources kept
- Drafting first versions that people then shape
WORKS AGAINST YOU
- Content tools asked to reason, and reasoning tools fed only content
- Lazy use: the original is lost and nobody can check
- Sameness: everything starts to look and sound alike
- Confident answers that are wrong
The test: does it make the people involved more capable, or only the output faster?
How do you build trust when technology becomes invisible?
When the screen disappears, people can no longer see what is happening, so trust has to be designed in. Don't trust, verify: keep originals and sources checkable, so trust never rests on one party alone. Show alternatives and the reasoning. Let people say no, undo and ask why. Be honest about what the system does not know. It is the question behind the keynote The Invisible Interface.
- Visible when it acts
- Checkable: the original stays
- Reversible by default
- Honest about its limits

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
What is AI direction?
The leadership discipline of deciding where AI belongs, how it should behave toward people, and who is accountable. It sits next to creative direction and art direction.
How is it different from AI strategy or AI ethics?
AI strategy asks what to build. AI ethics asks what is acceptable. AI direction asks how it should behave and feel for the people who meet it, and keeps a person accountable every day. It works alongside both.
Can AI replace art direction or creative direction?
No. AI can produce options. A person decides what is right for the brand and for the people it serves.
How do we start?
Send a short message describing where AI is entering your product or team and what worries you about it. We then explore whether advisory, a workshop or a talk fits.
